MASTIFF ASSOCIATION OPEN SHOW

26th SEPTEMBER 2004

Judge: Wendy Blackwell

It was an honour and a pleasure to judge at this show. I was surrounded by helpful and hardworking people who made everything go like clockwork, especially my steward who helped to keep me calm and focused and had so many specials to carry she must have been worn out. A special thanks to the exhibitors themselves without which we would not have had a show. The weather was wonderful used as I am to rain, living in Ireland, the sun made everything so much more enjoyable.

Where have all the big dogs gone? Yes there were a few and they were typical and sound and gained top places, but I find it hard to believe the changes I am seeing. To the breeders and judges I say please consider what you are doing, a large powerful dog can and should be able to move freely and with drive we should not be breeding smaller lighter dogs to achieve this end. Please also remember ours is a head breed, small plain heads with no noticeable stop are incorrect. I was first ‘wowed’ by mastiffs many years ago now but I have never forgotten that first impression. I feel some serious work must be done to maintain our own breed standard and not forget what we first loved about mastiffs.Temperament was mostly good as was movement, though many dogs lacked correct angulation and some mouths were not good.

A 10 yr old with better head but his movement let him down.

A substantial brindle with a good head, his movement let him down.
Res. - Cenninpedr Flash Gordon of Spirithill (Bromley)

Class 2 - Minor Puppy Dog (3)

1st - Kumormai Xavier (Knight)
Super fawn puppy with a good square typical head, well-developed rib, level topline, movement excellent.
- Best Puppy Dog & Best Puppy in Show -

2nd - Barbaro Samurai Warrior (Green)
A very similar type to 1st, a little taller and did not have such good confirmation. Moved well.
3rd - Harting Gilded Gold (Picton)

A lighter framework will need to develop in bone and body also lacking in stop, movement good.

Class 3 - Minor Puppy Bitch (5/1a)

1st - Kumormai Capuche (Knight)
Well developed for a baby, good tight feet, good bone, moved well. Eye showing a little red. Sound on the move.
- Best Puppy Bitch -
2nd - Kumormai Mystique (Knight)
Very similar in type to 1st, but has a light eye detracting from overall impression of head and expression, good mover.
3rd - Kumormai Taryn (Knight)
Litter sister to above with better head, dark mask and more pronounced stop, but her body is underdeveloped at this stage which could change with maturity, moved well.
Res. - Kumormai Destiny of Fylderiver (Olsson)

Class 4 - Puppy Dog (1)

1st - Bronson Bromley (Simper)
A well bodied puppy, nice spring of rib good strong feet and bone. Satisfactory movement, head plain with a round light eye.

Class 5 - Puppy Bitch (6/1a)

1st - Mansuetude A Quest For KTWO (Broomfield)
A brindle girl with good potential, excellent bone, correct head, a little overawed by the occasion making it difficult to assess movement.
2nd - Mansuetude Vertical Limit (Broomfield)
This was litter sister to 1st and was in all ways similar. Perhaps a shade less well developed but could change places on another day. Moved well.
3rd - Cwmtysswg Gwen of Salforda (Proudfoot)
A smaller type of bitch with good depth of body. Adequate bone, nice head and expression, needs to develop. Overall went well on the move.
Res. - Mansuetude Tocas Miricle (Lowry)
VHC - Farnaby False Economy (Baxter)

Class 6 – Junior Dog (3)

1st - Kumormai Crouching Tiger (Knight)
A very promising young dog. With correct substance for age, broad in chest, deep in rib, true mastiff head with square muzzle and noticeable stop, moved soundly with drive, would have liked a little more length in back.
2nd - Dixelyn Mabon (Willmott & Dix)
This dog had good bone with nice spring of rib. Moved well but his head was underdeveloped and I felt not correct.
3rd - Santmichal Storming Norman (Web)
In profile this is a nice looking dog, but he has a great deal of white on his front and has loose pasterns resulting in poor sloppy movement.

Class 7 – Special Yearling Dog (1)

1st - Tresylan Gryffindoor (Taylor)
A substantial dog, with breadth and depth of rib, level in topline correct mastiff head, failed in movement as weakness in pasterns led to floppy front gait.

Class 8 – Novice Dog (5/2a)

1st - Brookview Beau Harvester (Sarjeant)
I really liked this dog, he had substance, he had good bone, he had the correct head and expression and moved soundly.
2nd - Klanzmun Wallace of Thomaster (Fox)
An all round good mastiff, with broad chest well let down in rib, level topline, good bone. Moved freely but his head did not match up to the body.
3rd - Bronson Bromley (Simper)
see puppy dog.

Class 9 – Post Graduate Dog (7/4a)

1st - Darkling Joshua of Bredwardine (McCulloch & Williams)
A good sound brindle boy. Good head correct length of back, adequate bone. He has yet to develop into his full potential.
2nd - Rhilaubekan Sherwood (Raybone)
I really liked this dog, he had the correct head and expression, a well developed body, good bone and moved freely, but his total disinterest in the whole proceedings lost him the first place.
3rd - Salforda Black Panther (Proudfoot)
This was a nice brindle but as he really didn’t like me I could not assess him thoroughly.

Class 10 – Limit Dog (9/3a)

1st - Chevelu Land of Dreams for Heffalump (Dodd-Utting)
This was a truly beautiful mastiff. Huge head with dark mask and true expression. Large body well supported on massive bone. Moving well, Best Dog and Best Of Breed.
2nd - Hotsand Walker Tullemore to Brookview (imp) (Seager & Lewis)
A taller dog than 1st with good body and reasonable bone. His head was rather plain, moved freely.
3rd - Jengais Gunslinger of Barbaro (Green)
Didn’t stay in ring for write up.
Res. - Faerdorn Tiger Tales (Cox & Frost)
VHC - Farnaby No Rest For The Wikid at Spirithill (Bromley)

Class 11 – Open Dog (3/1a)

1st - Ch Domas Calthorpe from Delbeech ShCM (Beech)
Very appealing brindle with width over shoulder and loin, good bone, correct square mastiff head went soundly on the move, perhaps a little on the small side.
- Reserve Best Dog
-
2nd - Kumormai As Good As It Gets (Knight)
A different type to winner, A good body and good bone but his head was not so well developed and was loose on his pasterns which detracted from his overall movement.

Class 12 – Junior Bitch (2)

1st - Kumormai Kimono (Knight)
A well developed young fawn with a good head and true mastiff expression. Slight hesitancy on one back leg on the move but not enough to lose her first place.
2nd - Dixelyn Rhonwen (Willmott &Dix)
A smaller apricot that has the potential to improve with age, very sound on the move but today lacked any animation.

Class 13 – Special Yearling Bitch (3/2a)

1st - Friendly Fire of Dobunni (Smith)
A slightly leggy underveloped brindle who moved well but needs plenty of time to develop.

Class 14 – Novice Bitch (3/2a)

1st - Jumas Joy at Cyberus (Andrews)
This was a very sound young bitch with beautiful fluid movement, but she needs time to develop and mature.

Class 15 – Post Graduate Bitch (5/1a)

1st - Chevelu Dreamers Baby for Heffalump (Dodd-Utting)
This is a sister to my best dog and she has all his qualities in a more feminine form, a beautiful, typical, sound strong girl, who was easily my best bitch.
- Best Bitch & BOSIS -
2nd - Sapphire of Strathkinness Via Cyberus (Andrews)
Well built young brindle, head needs to break, a little light in bone, moved well.
3rd - Morganleyfay Andrastea (Bowdery)
I liked this bitch a lot she had a deep roomy body, correct head and expression, but she was small.
Res. - Klanzmun Lochran at Ebbstar (Heathcote & Fisher)

Class 16 – Limit Bitch (6/3a)

1st - Hugedogge Gunilla of Sobriety JW (imp) (Hill)
A well built young fawn bitch, width over loins, broad chest, good strong feet. Went well on the move, would have preferred a better stop without it her head looked plain.
2nd - Little Dorritt at Namous (Blaxter)
Very typical brindle strong in body and bone with the correct head, but she was in poor coat and looking older than her 4 yrs.
3rd - Jengais Sunlight Dancer of Barbaro (Green)
Sorry do not have any notes on this one.

Class 17 – Open Bitch (4/1a)

1st - Klanzmun The Sorceress (Knight)
A good strong fawn with deep body, good bone, lovely correct head and expression, sound mover.
- Res. Best Bitch -

2nd - Little Dorritt at Namous (Blaxter)
3rd - Craigavon Leoni at Jengren (Taylor)
This was a nice typical fawn bitch, good body and bone reasonable head, but was anxious and flustered on the move.
