MASTIFF ASSOCIATION OPEN SHOW

SUNDAY 24th SEPTEMBER 2000

Judge: Snr J. Castillo (Mansiff - Spain)

My most sincere thanks to all the people who supported me and made a most enjoyable day; also to my Stewards - I couldn't have asked for kinder or better help.

My overall impression of the general standard of the exhibits, as could be expected for an open show, was of a variety of both quality and type and, of course, a lot of youngsters that need to be accustomed to ring procedures.

I would like to point out the prevalent faults that I observed. A big number of exhibits could have done with a few pounds less, but the surprising fact was that when I pointed that out to the handlers they were genuinely surprised and unaware of the fact To me, the Mastiff, as a working dog, should be fit with sharply defined muscles.

Another feature was a number of short tails (to the hocks and below) but this is not important providing the root has a high set on. Finally I noticed particularly in certain lines which I could later pin-point on reading the catalogue with thick ears and often combined with eyes showing haw in detriment to the general expression.

Having said that, I must proceed by saying that, generally speaking, the exhibits had a very good character; no shyness was apparent to me apart from the reluctance of one of my winners to be made as he was told. Of course, the flooring didn't help. The younger stock showed good features both in type and movement. A lot of improvement in the rear construction.

I blame a few 'low in pastern' exhibits on the combination of too much weight on some, and lack of exercise apparent to me by the lack of muscle tone.

Finally I will explain that I had trouble to pick my best dogs, finding some exhibits, particularly three that were outstanding in head and front but somewhere along the line deserted my enthusiasm. Leaving me with the choice of a less athletic one as I am inclined to prefer, for a more typical conventional choice with lots of bone and size as the main assets.

I found the bitches more uniform, sound and within the standard - but there again it is always easier with the females.

I would like to praise the general quality of the puppies for keeping an average high level of type, construction and character.

Finally to express my satisfaction for having had probably the most numerous entry in an open show, an exquisite correctness from all the exhibitors, and the kindest treatment from show manager and MA committee who were kind enough to present me with a lovely engraved tankard which I will cherish enormously.

Thank You
J.M. Castillo

Class 3 - Minor Puppy Bitch (5/2a)

Very tall typical brindle with good bone and substance for age. Lovely expression. Movement at the back a bit loose due partly to flooring indoors. Liked her very much.

3rd - Morganlafay Princess Alida (South)

Class 4 - Puppy Dog (11/2a)

An excellent 9 month old fawn, very typical with excellent bone, good head and nice black mask well defined, moved with aplomb. Excellent dark eye, very sound all over.
2nd - Bulliff Del (Say)
Although an excellent girl all over, her expression was spoilt a bit by somewhat round eyes.
3rd - Masnou Desdemona (Blaxter)
A good typical brindle, I would have liked a more pronounced stop, otherwise a very nice puppy who moved with ease. Her handler got in a bit of a muddle.

Class 7 - Special Yearling Dog (3/0a)

1st - Brookview Born Free (Seager & Lewis)
18 month old fawn, very developed for age. Excellent bone though I would have liked a more energetic dog for my Best Dog. I chose this youngster on account of his exceptional size and bone. I was disappointed when at the final stage he refused flat to move. Again, flooring played to his disadvantage. Typical.
- Best Dog, BOSIS & Res. BIS -

Sound all over, 19 month old brindle. Slower to mature type of dog; could have been 1st but size and type decided the choice.

2nd - Jengren Jailhouse Rock at Prixcan (Manfredi)
Imposing 2 yr 9 month old brindle; excellent front, well defined muscles (an oddity where the majority were overweight and low in muscle tone!). His head is really good; a magnificent dog apart from low tail set and straight angulation which deters his back movement.

2.5 year old brindle with excellent head, eyes, ears and expression. Good bone, correct top line, tail set and back angulation which produced automatically a powerful correct mevement.

Similar in type to 1st. Preferred general head and expression of 1st. Would have liked better back angulation.

14 month old apricot girl, very developed for age; too much leather on ears, again too much weight to carry for a youngster, nevertheless she moved with ease.
